Indiana Drama Club's World Premiere of Super Cyber Battle Rangers – A Stellar Success!
Indiana Drama Club’s Super Cyber Battle Rangers made its world premiere in November 2024, and the results were nothing short of spectacular. For the first time ever, the club ventured into presenting a full-length musical outside of the IndyFringe festival—and the outcome was pure magic. Each night, the show sold an unexpected number of tickets, packing the theater with enthusiastic fans and curious newcomers. It was clear that Super Cyber Battle Rangers had captured the hearts of the Indianapolis community, quickly establishing itself as more than just a local hit—it became an unforgettable experience.
This extraordinary production wouldn’t have been possible without the invaluable support of Arts for Lawrence, who provided a home for rehearsals and performances, ensuring the creative vision could flourish. Their collaboration was vital in bringing this ambitious project to life. We are also incredibly grateful for the generous grant from Christ Church Cathedral Strawberry Festival, which provided essential funding to help make this show a reality. Thanks to these key supporters, the Indiana Drama Club was able to push creative boundaries and deliver a production that will be remembered for years to come.
The show, which blends action-packed adventure with heartfelt moments of friendship and identity, took audiences on a thrilling ride with its vibrant cast of characters. But what truly set this production apart was the passion and creativity of its team. Written by playwright Andy Sterneman and composer Nathan Mensah, Super Cyber Battle Rangers brought together two visionary minds who had worked tirelessly to create something truly special. And in an unexpected and heartwarming moment, both Sterneman and Mensah were present at the premiere to experience the magic firsthand.
Nathan Mensah, reflecting on the experience, said with enthusiasm, "It was an unexpected surprise to get to come up on stage to dance with the cast. Amanda and Rai, you two are creative visionaries beyond compare. No way could we have done this with any other directors but you.”
He added, with admiration, "These Rangers were the real deal!! Whenever we think about these characters, we will think of YOU!!"
Their words echoed throughout the venue as the audience erupted into applause, appreciating not just the brilliance of the show, but the synergy of a team that truly poured their hearts into every note and every step. Directors Amanda and Rai had created a world where their vision—and the actors’ talents—came alive in ways no one expected.
The performance featured 30 talented students from across the greater Indianapolis area, ranging in age from 5 to 18. The cast’s energy was palpable, and the crowd responded in kind, filling the theater with cheers and excitement. It wasn’t just family and friends supporting their loved ones; it was a community of strangers who had found themselves swept up in the world of the Super Cyber Battle Rangers.
One audience member shared their experience with us, saying, "I was really impressed with the show and loved it. I would never forgive myself if I didn't go." It seems that word of mouth had spread, and the buzz was real. Fans who hadn’t known a single person in the show showed up, wearing their Rangers shirts, eager to be part of the excitement. Many of them found themselves completely captivated by the story, the energy, and the characters.
"I loved Jedd! I got so excited when he came out for the first time," one audience member grinned, still glowing with excitement from the performance. It's clear that the cast made a lasting impact, and Jedd, in particular, was a fan favorite—his charisma shining through and leaving the crowd wanting more.
For many of the young performers, this was their first experience being part of a brand-new, full-scale musical production, and they embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and dedication. The cast, led by some incredibly talented young actors, poured themselves into their roles—delivering each song and high-energy fight scene with passion and commitment. Their performances were a true testament to their hard work, as well as the incredible dedication of their directors.
In addition to their acting, several students also contributed to the production behind the scenes, helping to design the sets, props, costumes, and run backstage crew. These contributions not only enhanced the visual storytelling but also gave the students a deeper sense of ownership in the production. Together, the cast and crew collaborative efforts made the show a remarkable success, showcasing both their artistic growth and the incredible teamwork that made the entire experience unforgettable.
For everyone involved, this was more than just a production—it was a celebration of creativity, community, and passion. The support from the audience, both familiar faces and new friends, made it clear that Super Cyber Battle Rangers wasn’t just a one-time success. The show has already sparked something that will continue to grow, hoping to see the show get submitted to a licensing company. Possibly even a cast recording, which our students are very eager to be a part of.
